USAN Deepwater FPSO Project, Offshore Nigeria
Offshore Construction Role
Offshore Nigeria
July 2011 – January 2012
Offshore Construction and FPSO Installation Overview
This offshore project was delivered prior to the formation of Trinity Offshore Construction and reflects Karl Mulder’s personal experience supporting deepwater FPSO installation activities. The project formed part of a major deepwater FPSO development executed offshore Nigeria in water depths of approximately 850 metres.
The work was delivered for a large international FPSO development programme and involved offshore construction execution across critical mooring and installation scopes. Execution required disciplined offshore coordination and strict adherence to approved installation procedures.
The experience gained on this project now informs how Trinity Offshore Construction approaches FPSO mooring, offshore installation, and deepwater execution activities.
Deepwater FPSO Project Context
The USAN project involved deepwater FPSO installation works carried out under challenging offshore conditions with limited margins for error. The scope included FPSO mooring, riser installation, and flexible umbilical pull-in operations supporting offshore production systems.
Karl Mulder supported offshore construction execution on the project, gaining hands-on experience in FPSO mooring systems and deepwater installation activities. The role required close coordination between offshore vessels, construction teams, and installation personnel throughout the offshore campaign.
Offshore Construction Scope of Work
FPSO Mooring and Hook-Up Support
Karl supported FPSO mooring and hook-up activities, ensuring mooring lines, risers, and umbilicals were installed and connected in line with approved procedures. These activities required precise coordination between vessels and offshore teams to maintain vessel stability and control.
Riser and Umbilical Pull-In Operations
The project included riser, water injection, and flexible umbilical pull-in operations. These activities required controlled rigging, winch operations, and disciplined execution to manage load control and alignment during offshore installation.
Offshore Rigging and Winch Operations
Offshore rigging and winch systems were used to support installation and pull-in activities. Karl supported execution by ensuring rigging operations were carried out safely and in accordance with offshore safety requirements.
Deepwater Installation Support
The role included supporting deepwater installation scopes across multiple offshore interfaces. Clear communication and coordination were essential to maintaining safe execution under deepwater conditions.
Safety, Leadership and Offshore Programme Management
FPSO installation projects present significant safety and operational challenges due to vessel movements, environmental exposure, and complex offshore interfaces. The primary challenge was executing installation activities safely while maintaining control over mooring and pull-in operations.
Karl’s delivery approach focused on disciplined execution, strict compliance with offshore procedures, and continuous communication between offshore teams. Maintaining situational awareness and adherence to approved methods was critical throughout the installation campaign.
Results and Project Outcomes
Offshore installation activities were completed successfully, contributing to the commissioning and operation of the FPSO. The project supported the safe and controlled installation of mooring systems, risers, and umbilicals under deepwater conditions.
The experience gained remains directly relevant to modern FPSO mooring and deepwater offshore developments requiring disciplined execution and strong offshore coordination.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an FPSO mooring system?
An FPSO mooring system consists of anchors, chains, and mooring lines designed to keep an FPSO securely positioned offshore under environmental and operational loads.
What does FPSO hook-up involve?
FPSO hook-up involves connecting mooring lines, risers, and umbilicals to the vessel during offshore installation activities.
Why is FPSO mooring experience important?
FPSO mooring experience is critical for understanding vessel stability, load management, and long-term offshore operational safety.
What are flexible umbilical pull-ins?
Flexible umbilical pull-ins involve bringing control and power lines from the seabed into an FPSO using controlled rigging and winch systems.
What makes deepwater FPSO projects complex?
Deepwater FPSO projects involve heavy components, environmental exposure, and limited margins for error during offshore installation activities.
How does this experience apply to future offshore developments?
Experience gained on deepwater FPSO projects directly informs safe and efficient execution of future offshore installations in similar environments.
